DoctorNewsGlobal is a news site you can read without an account. We do not run reader logins, comments or profiles, so there is no account of yours for us to hold.

What we collect

Our server keeps ordinary access logs: the requested address, the time, the referring page, your browser's user-agent string and the IP address the request came from. We use them to keep the site running and to investigate abuse or errors. We do not build reader profiles from them and we do not sell them.

Cookies

How we count readers

We keep our own count of how often each story is read, so the newsroom can see what is being used. It runs on our own server; no analytics company is involved and nothing is loaded into your browser from anywhere else.

It works without a cookie and without storing your address. When a page is read we derive a short code from your address and your browser's own description of itself, mixed with a value that changes every day. The code cannot be reversed, and because the daily value changes, the same browser produces a different code tomorrow. What we keep is the code, the story, the time, whether the visit came from a search engine or a link, and the broad kind of device — phone, tablet or desktop. Those records are deleted after ninety days; what stays is a per-story daily total that identifies nobody.

We also refuse requests from an address that is making an unusual number of them in a short time, which is how a site of this size defends itself against being scraped. That works on the same kind of code — the address itself is not stored — and those records are deleted after ninety days too.

Advertising

The advertisements on this site are sold by us directly. Each one is an image stored on our own server, served from our own domain like any other picture on the page. There is no advertising network, no ad tag, no tracking pixel and no third-party script, so opening a page with an advertisement on it contacts nobody but us, and no advertiser learns that you were here.

Clicking an advertisement goes through an address on this site before continuing to the advertiser, which is how we can tell an advertiser how many clicks their campaign received. That count works exactly the way the reading count does: the same daily-changing code, no cookie, and your address is not stored. The individual records are deleted after ninety days; what stays is a per-advertisement daily total that identifies nobody. Once you arrive on the advertiser's own site you are on their site, under their privacy policy, not ours.

Advertisements are labelled as such, and advertisers have no say in what we publish.

The site sets one session cookie and the token that goes with it, so the server can recognise a single browsing session and protect forms against cross-site request forgery. There are no analytics, advertising or social-media cookies — including on pages carrying advertising, because the advertisements are our own images rather than a network's. The detail is in our cookie policy.

Third parties

Reading this site sends your data to nobody else. Every file a page loads — stylesheets, scripts, images, advertisements and web fonts — comes from our own domain, so no other company's servers are contacted and none of them receive your IP address. No advertising network is embedded in these pages.

Newsletter

We are not collecting email addresses yet. When the newsletter opens, subscribing will be explicit, confirmed by email, and every message will carry an unsubscribe link; addresses will be used to send that newsletter and nothing else.

How long we keep things

Access logs are kept only as long as they are useful for operating the site and are then discarded. There is no other reader data to keep.

Your rights

Since we hold no account and no profile for you, there is normally nothing of yours to export or delete. If you believe an access log entry identifies you and you want it removed, write to us and say so; we will tell you what we hold and remove what we can.

Children

This is a trade publication written for healthcare professionals. It is not directed at children and we do not knowingly collect information from them.

Other policies

How we work as a newsroom is set out in our editorial policy; the terms the site is published on are in our terms of use.
