Social determinants of health

Income, education, housing, work, environment and discrimination account for more of the variation in health between groups than healthcare does. This is why differences in life expectancy between neighbourhoods of one city can be as large as differences between countries, and why health services alone cannot close them.

We report determinants because health stories are routinely framed as questions of behaviour or of medical provision when the evidence points elsewhere.
